June 2011 Dayton City Council Meeting

There have been numerous complaints made concerning how public meetings are conducted in Rhea County, Tennessee. As many know, Rhea County has a rather systematic way of doing things. Currently there are lots problems that need addressing in Rhea County such as increased poverty, job vanishing, businesses shut down, teen pregnacy on the rise, education ranking bad on the state level and a whole lot more problems that effect the way of life for the people of Rhea County. However, Rhea County is a large, rural county and these problems appear out of control.

Presently, the Rhea County Commission is considering building a new high school to address a serious overcrowding issue. Also, the county is considering building a new and much larger jail or justice center to house inmates as the jail too is overcrowded. However, one major concer is that roughly 80% of those inmates have not been convicted of anything. These "inmates" are actually pretrial detainees that cannot afford to post bail. One would think that a judge could step up and have bond reduction hearings to help offset the tremendous burden imposed on the taxpayers for having to house, feed, provide medical care and provide for basically everything just to keep a person locked up sitting in jail under an "innocent until proven guilty" limbo. Advocates such as District Attorney General Mike Taylor has went on record of saying that by lowering bonds of pretrial detainees would solve the jail overcrowding. It is our opinion that General Taylor is absolutely correct. There is no need to build a larger facility just to house persons not convicted of a crime, merely charged with a crime. Believe it or not, there is a difference.

Hopefully one day maybe this website/blog,online newspaper or whatever else we refer to this adventure to be can publish and cover ALL county committee meetings. Unfortunantly, as of now the contributors to this website are few, we are scattered and there are no resources as this entire website is FREE. Every video that will be uploaded and all news reports, information and any assistance we can help provide our community is FREE. With that said, we are going to start the Dayton Herald with the express intent of covering every Dayton City Council meeting.

Maybe in the future we can include the cities of Graysville and Spring City and perhaps even cover Rhea County Commission meetings. But for now, we are doing what we can and the beginning of any adventure begins with one step...

This is that first step.
